Check your iPhone’s software is up to date

apple watch won’t update unless your iPhone’s software is also up to date. To check this, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap General > Software Update. If there’s an update available, install it and then try updating apple watch again.

Check that your Watch is connected to its charger

Your Watch needs to be connected to its charger and have at least 50% battery power in order to update wirelessly. If your Watch is low on power, you’ll need to connect it to its charger and wait for it to charge up before proceeding with the update.

If your Watch is already connected to its charger and has sufficient battery power, try moving it closer to your iPhone. The update process relies on a solid, stable connection between your devices, so distance can sometimes interfere with the process.

Check that your Watch has enough battery power

Updating the software on your Apple Watch is simple and only takes a few minutes, but you’ll need to make sure your Watch has enough battery power before you begin. If you’re updating wirelessly, your Watch needs to be connected to its charger and have at least 50% battery power. If you’re updating using your iPhone, your Watch needs to have at least 30% battery power.

If you need to charge your Watch, connect it to its charger and leave it for a while. Once it has enough charge, try updating again.

Check that your Watch is in range of your iPhone

If your Apple Watch isn’t updating, there are a few things you can check to get it working again. First, make sure that your Watch is in range of your iPhone. If it’s not, the update won’start because your Watch needs to be connected to your iPhone to download the update.

If your Watch is in range of your iPhone and it still isn’t updating, try restarting both your Watch and your iPhone. To restart your Watch, press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider. Drag the slider to turn off your Watch. Once it’s off, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo.

To restart your iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you see the slider. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone. Once it’s off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

Once both devices have restarted, try updating your Apple Watch again.

Check that your Watch is connected to Wi-Fi

It’s important to make sure that your Watch is connected to Wi-Fi before beginning an update. Updating over a cellular connection might incur additional charges.

If you’re using an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, you can update your software without your iPhone:

1. Make sure that you have the latest version of watchOS.
2. On your Apple Watch, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
3. Download and install any updates that are available.

Check that watch app on your iPhone is open

Make sure that the Watch app on your iPhone is open. The Watch app might have been moved to a folder on your iPhone’s Home screen.

On your iPhone, tap the App Store icon.

If you see an item in the Updates list that begins with “Watch OS,” tap Update next to it.

Check that you have the latest version of the Watch app

Assuming that you have an Apple Watch that’s compatible with watchOS 6 (Series 3 and later), there are a few things you can check if your Apple Watch isn’t updating.

First, make sure that you have the latest version of the Watch app on your iPhone. You can do this by opening the App Store, tapping the Updates tab, and then tapping Update next to the Watch app.

If there’s no update available, or if the Watch app is already up to date, move on to the next section.

Check that you have the latest version of iOS

If you’re using an iPhone 6s or later, you need iOS 13 or later to update your Apple Watch.
To check for updates, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap General -> Software Update. If an update is available, tap Install.

You might need to enter your passcode and agree to terms and conditions.
If you can’t see the update on your iPhone, make sure that your Apple Watch is connected to its charger and within range of your iPhone. Then try to update your Apple Watch again.

Restart your iPhone and your Watch

1. On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
2. Go to My Watch > General > Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings.*
3. Wait for your iPhone to restart, then open the Watch app again and try to update your watch.
4. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on. Then try to update your watch again.
5. If you still can’t update, try force quitting the Watch app: On your iPhone, double-press the Home button, then swipe right or left to find and open the Watch app preview. Swipe up on the Watch app preview to close it. Then open the Watch app again and try to update your watch.
6. Restart your iPhone: Press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button until you see the red slider appear, then drag the slider to turn off your device completely.* After a minute has passed, press and hold down Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo appear on your screen, then release Sleep/Wake button — don’t drag the slider in this case!

Unpair your Watch and pair it again with your iPhone

If you can’t update your Watch to the latest version of watchOS, try unpairing your Watch from your iPhone, then pair it again:

* On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.

Tap Continue on your iPhone when asked if you want to Restore from a Backup or Set Up as New. If you choose Restore from a Backup:
