Early Life

Eli Apple was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Civil War historian Annie Apple and Timothy Apple. He has four brothers, one of whom is former Chargers linebacker Thomas Keating. His father played football at Wesley College. Apple’s parents divorced when he was six years old, and he was raised by his mother in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. He attended Eastern High School, where he played football, basketball and ran track. In football, he played wide receiver and cornerback. As a senior in 2011, he had 45 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries, helping his team to the state title game. In track & field, Apple ran the 400-meter dash and placed second at the 2010 New Jersey Meet of Champions with a time of 48.73 seconds

College Career

Eli Apple started his collegiate career at Ohio State University. As a true freshman in 2012, he played in all 14 games and recorded 27 tackles and an interception. In 2013, he had 55 tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He was a key member of the Buckeyes’ secondary that led the team to a perfect 14-0 record and a victory in the 2014 Orange Bowl. The Buckeyes went on to win the 2014 national championship, defeating the University of Oregon in the national championship game.

After his junior year, Apple decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and declare for the 2016 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round of the draft with the 10th overall pick.

Apple made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2016 season against the Dallas Cowboys. In his rookie season, he started all 16 games and recorded 73 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

In 2017, Apple started the first 12 games of the season before suffering a season-ending injury. He finished the season with 28 tackles and 1 interception.

Apple was traded to the New Orleans Saints during the 2018 season. He appeared in 11 games with the Saints, recording 9 tackles and 1 interception.
