To pay in stores, hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID or Double Click the button on your Apple Watch. You don’t even need to wake up your device or open an app. Depending on the store, you might need to sign a receipt or enter a PIN. If you’re paying with Apple Pay in a store that also accepts contactless payments, you might be able to pay without opening an app or needing to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. Look for one of these symbols at checkout:
On your iPhone X or later, double-click the side button and hold the display up to the contactless reader. Depending on the store, you might need to sign a receipt or enter a PIN.
With iOS 12.4 or later and an iPhone SE (1st generation), 5s, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus; double-click the home button then hold up your iPhone near the contactless reader as you would with Touch ID.
With iOS 11–12.3; double-click the home button then authenticate using Touch ID (or passcode) as you normally would when unlocking your device — no need to hold it near the reader — then hold it up to the contactless reader as soon as Siri says “Done.” You can turn off this setting so that you always have to authenticate using Face ID/Touch ID/passcode before paying: go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
If prompted by an attendee during events such as concerts and sporting events; double-click the home button then authenticate using Touch ID (or passcode) as you normally would when unlocking your device — no need to hold it near the reader — then hold it up to the contactless reader when prompted by an attendee holding an NFC tag scanner near your iPhone. You can use Apple Pay in Safari on any Mac made after 2012 that’s running macOS Sierra or later. Just look for the Apple Pay button at checkout, and then complete the payment using your iPhone or iPad.
