The Different generations of Apple Watch
The Apple Watch is a smartwatch that was released by Apple Inc. in 2015. It is the company’s first foray into the wearables market. There are three generations of the Apple Watch: the original, released in 2015; the Series 2, released in 2016; and the Series 3, released in 2017.
Series 0
The original Apple Watch, now referred to as Series 0, was announced on September 9, 2014, and released on April 24, 2015. It was the first Apple Watch released and it started a new product line for Apple.
Series 0 watches wereitans of the previous generation iPod nano. The Watch sported a square aluminum chassis with rounded edges and a plastic face. It came in two case sizes: 38 mm (1.5 in) and 42 mm (1.7 in).
The Series 0 watch lacked a built-in speaker, meaning that phone calls could only be conducted over a headset or earphones. The Watch also had 8 GB of storage, less than half of what was offered by the Series 2 and 3 Watches.
Series 1
The original Apple Watch was released on April 24, 2015, and it was quickly replaced by the Series 1 on September 16, 2016. The Series 1 featured the same design as the original Apple Watch but included a brighter screen and an updated processor.
The Series 2 was released on September 16, 2016, alongside the Series 1. It featured an updated design, a brighter screen, and GPS capabilities. The Series 2 was also waterproof, allowing you to take it for a swim.
The Series 3 was released on September 22, 2017, and it added cellular connectivity and an updated processor. The design remained largely the same as the previous two generations.
The Series 4 was released on September 21, 2018. It featured an updated design with slimmer bezels and a larger display. The Series 4 also introduced new health features such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor.
The latest generation of Apple Watch is the Series 5, which was released on September 20, 2019. It features an always-on display, a built-in compass, and new materials such as titanium and ceramic.
Series 2
The Apple Watch Series 2 is the second-generation model of the Apple Watch. It was announced on September 7, 2016, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and was released on September 16, 2016. It was succeeded by the Series 3 on September 22, 2017.
The Series 2 has a dual-core S2 processor and watchOS 3. It is 50% faster than the original Apple Watch. The display is now twice as bright as before, and is rated at 1,000 nits. It is also water resistant to 50 meters (164 feet), making it suitable for swimming. The cellular version supports LTE and UMTS, and can be used without an iPhone if desired.
Series 3
The third-generation Apple Watch was released on September 22, 2017, alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Like the Series 2 that preceded it, the Series 3 comes in two versions: one with built-in GPS and cellular (LTE) support, and one that just uses GPS. For the first time, both versions of the watch come in either aluminum or stainless steel cases. You can tell which model you have by looking at the Digital Crown—if it’s red, you have a cellular model; if it’s not, you don’t.
The biggest change with the Series 3 is that it features a faster dual-core processor that Apple says is 70 percent faster than the chip in the Series 2. The new watch also includes an altimeter for tracking elevation gain and loss throughout the day. Perhaps most importantly, though, is that for the first time you can use apple watch without having your iPhone with you. While previous versions of the watch could connect to Wi-Fi networks on their own, they still required an iPhone to do things like send messages or stream music. With the new LTE support, however, your watch can do all those things even when your phone is nowhere to be found.
Series 4
The Apple Watch Series 4 was announced on September 12, 2018. It was released on September 21, 2018. The main new features over the Series 3 are a larger display area due to thinner bezels, an updated processor (the S4), a next-generation gyroscope and accelerometer which enable fall detection and ECG capabilities, as well as an improved back design that allows the Watch to connect to cellular networks even in areas with very weak LTE signals.
How to tell which series you have
The first thing you need to do is find your watch. Once you have your watch, you need to look at the back of it. There, you will see a small engraving that says “Apple Watch” and then a 4-digit number. This number corresponds to the series of your watch.
Check your watchOS version
To find out which series your Apple Watch is, check the watchOS version:
-Open the watch app on your iPhone.
-Tap the watch tab tap general > About.
