Fall detection is a new feature in watchOS 5 that can automatically call emergency services if you fall and don’t appear to get back up. The feature is designed for people who might not be able to reach their phone in the event of a fall, and it could potentially save your life. Here’s how to set it up.
Set up your emergency contacts.
Apple Watch can automatically call emergency services if you fall and can’t get up. But before you turn on fall detection, you need to set up your emergency contacts. That way, if something happens and you can’t tell your watch to call for help, it will call them for you.
Here’s how:
1. Open the Health app on your iPhone and tap the Summary tab.
2. Tap Emergency Contacts.
3. Tap the + button and add your emergency contacts. Make sure to include their relationship to you (e.g., “Mom,” “Dad,” “Partner”).
4. When you’re finished adding contacts, tap Done.
Test your fall detection.
Once you have set up hard fall detection, you will want to test it to make sure it is working properly. To do this, you will need to find a place where you can safely drop apple watch from a height of at least four feet. If you are unable to do this, you can also use a hard object to strike your watch against. Once you have found a place to test, follow these steps:
1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
2. Tap on Emergency SOS.
3.Tap the slider next to Fall Detection.
4. Tap the Test button.
5. Drop your watch from a height of at least four feet, or strike it against a hard surface.
If everything is working properly, you should see an alert on your screen that says “Emergency SOS Activated” and hear an emergency siren sound from your watch. You will also see an option to Call Emergency Services or Dismiss the alert. If you do not see this alert, or if you see an error message, then fall detection is not working properly on your Apple Watch and you contact apple support for help.
