How to Set Up Your Apple Pencil

Whether you’re a first-apple pencil user or looking for ways to get more out of your Pencil, this guide will show you how to set it up and get started with using it on your iPad.

Open the box and remove the Apple Pencil

Open the box and remove the Apple Pencil. If you see a small, white disc on the end of your Apple Pencil, make sure to remove it before start using your Apple Pencil.

Unscrew the cap and remove the Lightning connector

To use your Apple Pencil, you’ll need to connect it to your iPad Pro. Start by unscrewing the cap and removing the built-in Lightning connector cover.

Next, hold the Apple Pencil near the top of your iPad Pro. The side of the Pencil with the smaller circle goes against the screen.

When you see the Pair button, tap it.

Pair your Apple Pencil with your iPad

To use your Apple Pencil, you need to pair it with your iPad. Here’s how:

1. Turn on Bluetooth on your iPad.
2. Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.
3. When prompted, tap Continue. If you don’t see a prompt, tap the iPad Home button, then tap settings app . Tap Bluetooth, then tap the Bluetooth button to turn it on.
4. Look for Apple Pencil in the Devices list and tap it when it appears. Or wait for Apple Pencil to pair automatically.

Charge your Apple Pencil

When you first get your Apple Pencil, make sure to charge it fully. To do this, simply attach the Lightning connector to the charging port on the side of the Pencil and plug it into your iPad.

Once it’s plugged in, you’ll see a small lightning bolt next to the Pencil icon in the status bar, indicating that it’s charging. It should only take a few minutes to charge enough for 30 minutes of use, so you can easily do this while you’re setting up your iPad.

If you plan on using your Apple Pencil a lot, you can keep it charged by attaching it to the magnetic strip on the side of your iPad. This way, it will charge whenever your iPad is connected to power.
