Introduction
Apples and cinnamon go together like peanut butter and jelly. They just belong together. You can smell the warm, sweet, spice of cinnamon when you walk into a room and instantly feel at home. It’s the same way with apple dumplings. The combination of tart apples, sweet sugar, and warm spices wrapped in a flakey dough is impossible to resist.
Apple dumplings are easy to make and only require a few ingredients. The most important part is to use a good quality apple. I prefer Granny Smith apples because they are tart and have a firm texture. However, you can use any type of apple that you like. Just be sure to avoid apples that are too soft or mealy.
The dough for the dumplings is also important. I use a basic pie dough recipe, but you can also use store-bought dough if you’re short on time. The key is to make sure that the dough is cold when you work with it. If it gets too warm, it will be difficult to work with and will result in tough dumplings.
Once you have your ingredients assembled, the actual process of making the dumplings is pretty straightforward.start by peeling and coring the apples. Then cut them into small pieces and toss them with sugar and cinnamon. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut it into small squares. Place a piece of apple in the center of each square, then fold up the corners of the dough and pinch them together to seal in the filling.
Bake the dumplings in a hot oven until they are golden brown and flakey. Serve them warm, drizzled with caramel sauce or ice cream for an extra special treat!
What You Need
-2 cans (21 ounces each) of apple pie filling
-2 tubes (10 ounces each) of Crescent rolls
-1 cup of sugar
-1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
-1/2 cup of (1 stick) butter, melted
Making the Dough
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 tablespoons sugar
1 large egg
5 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
2. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together into a bowl. Add shortening and rub in with your fingers until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in sugar. Beat egg with milk and stir into the flour mixture until it forms a soft dough. If dough is too stiff, add more milk 1 tablespoon at a time. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut dough into 3×3 inch squares and place an apple slice in the center of each square. Lightly brush edges of dough with water and bring up corners to enclose apples, pinching at the top to form dumplings. Place dumplings on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.”
Assembling the Dumplings
Place an apple on a piece of dough and then add a spoonful of sugar-cinnamon mixture to the center of the apple. Be sure to leave some room at the top of the apple so that you can seal the dough around it once itβs rolled up. Next, take the two opposite sides of the dough and bring them up over the apple, overlapping in the center. Pinch the dough together in the center, and then twist the two ends together to seal. Place the dumpling seam-side down on a greased baking dish. Repeat with remaining apples and dough.
Baking the Dumplings
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Place the dumplings in a baking dish, pour the melted butter over them, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until the pastry is golden brown.
