How to Make Apple Cider Donuts

When fall comes around, one of the best things to do is to visit an apple orchard and pick some fresh apples. And while you’re there, you might as well pick up some ingredients to make these delicious apple cider donuts!

What You Need

1 cup apple cider
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 large egg
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Making the Dough

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, brown sugar and cider until well combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the grated apple.

Place the dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or overnight.

Frying the Donuts

To fry the donuts, heat 2 to 3 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat until it registers 375°F on a candy or deep-fry thermometer. While the oil is heating, line a cooling rack with paper towels and set it over a baking sheet.

When the oil is ready, gently lower 2 or 3 donuts into the pot. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the donuts for 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.

As each donut is done, use a slotted spoon to transfer it to the prepared cooling rack. Allow the donuts to cool for 5 minutes before glazing.

In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Set aside.
