-6 cups apples, peeled and chopped

1.start with soft apples: Applesauce is the key ingredient in apple butter, so you’ll want to start with apples that are soft enough to easily mash. peeled and cored apples will work best.
2. Combine the apples with sugar and spices: In a large pot, combine the applesauce, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Stir until everything is evenly mixed.
3. Cook over low heat: Place the pot over low heat and cook for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally. The goal is for the mixture to become thick and dark brown in color.
4. Puree the mixture: Once the apple butter has cooked down, use an immersion blender (or transfer it to a regular blender) to puree the mixture until it’s smooth.
5. Can or freeze the apple butter: Enjoy your fresh apple butter right away or store it in jars in the fridge for up to two weeks. For longer storage, you can also freezeapple butter in freezer-safe jars for up to six months.
How to Make Apple Butter

Step One: Choose Your Apples
The type of apple you use is really up to you and your preference. A firmer apple will take longer to break down and will result in a chunkier apple butter, while a softer apple will break down more easily and result in a smoother apple butter. For this recipe, we used a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples. You’ll need about 2 pounds or 910 grams of apples.
Step Two: Cut Up Your Apples
You don’t need to peel your apples for this recipe, but you will want to cut them into small pieces. We recommend cutting them into quarters or sixths. This will make it easier for them to cook down and turn into that smooth, creamy apple butter we’re all looking for.
Step Three: Add Apples to the Pot
Once your apples are all cut up, add them to a large pot or Dutch oven along with the water, sugar, lemon juice, spices, and salt. Stir everything together until the sugar has dissolved and then put the pot over medium-high heat.
Step Four: Cook the Apples Down
Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low so that it’s at a simmer. Put a lid on the pot and let it cook for about an hour or until the apples are very soft and starting to fall apart. Stir occasionally during this time.
Step Five: Puree the Apples
Once the apples are cooked down, remove the pot from heat and let it cool for a few minutes before pureeing with an immersion blender or transferring to a regular blender in batches. Blend until the mixture is smooth with no chunks remaining.
Step Two: Prep Your Apples
Now that you’ve gathered your ingredients, it’s time to prep your apples. Start by peeling and coring them – you can do this with a sharp knife or an apple peeler/corer tool. Then, cut the apples into small chunks – they should be about 1″ diced.
If you’re using a slow cooker, add the apples to the crock now. If you’re using a stovetop pot, wait to add the apples until Step Three.
Step Three: Cook Your Apples
Now it’s time to cook your apples. You can do this on the stovetop or in a slow cooker. If you’re using a stove, put the apples in a large pot with a little bit of water and cook them over medium heat until they’re soft. If you’re using a slow cooker, put the apples in the cooker with a little bit of water and set it on low. Let the apples cook until they’re soft.
Step Four: Puree Your Apples
Now that your apples are cooked and soft, it’s time to puree them. You can do this a few different ways. If you have an immersion blender, you can carefully blend the apples right in the pot. If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can use a regular blender or food processor. Just be careful when transferring hot liquids!
If you’re using a regular blender or food processor, you’ll need to puree the apples in batches. Once each batch is smooth, transfer it back to the pot. Continue until all of the apples are pureed.
Step Five: Can or Freeze Your Apple Butter
Once your apple butter has reached the perfect consistency, it’s time to can or freeze it. Canning is best way to preserve your apple butter for long-term storage. If you choose to freeze your apple butter, be sure to use freezer-safe containers.
To can your apple butter, sterilize canning jars and lids according to the manufacturer’s directions. Fill the jars with apple butter, leaving ½ inch of headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars clean with a damp cloth. Screw on the lids and rings until snug.
Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Start timing when the water comes to a boil, not when you add the jars. Remove from the boiling water bath and let cool undisturbed for 12-24 hours. Check that the seals have popped down in the center of each lid. If any seals are still raised, refrigerate that jar and use within three weeks.
For freezing, simply spoon apple butter into freezer-safe containers, leaving ½ inch of headspace at the top of each container. Be sure to label and date your containers before freezing. Your apple butter should keep in the freezer for up to one year.
Assuming you followed the recipe to the letter, your apple butter should now be finished! You can either enjoy it as is or store it in a clean, airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If you want to keep it for longer, you can also freeze it for up to 6 months.
