Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your iPhone with your Apple TV
If you’re trying to figure out how to control Apple TV without a remote, you’ve come to the right place. While it’s certainly not ideal to have to use your iPhone as a replacement for the Siri Remote, in a pinch it’ll do the job. Here’s how.
Before we get started, it’s worth noting that if you have an Apple TV 4K or an Apple TV HD, you can control it with your voice using Siri. Just hold down the Siri button on your Siri Remote and say what you want to do. But if you don’t have a Siri Remote—or if you want to use your iPhone as a remote—read on.
To control your Apple TV with your iPhone, you’ll need to download the free Remote app from the App Store. Once it’s installed, open it up and make sure your iPhone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV. You should see your Apple TV listed at the top of the screen. Tap on it to connect.
Now that you’re connected, you can use your iPhone as a touchpad to navigate around the Apple TV interface. Just swipe around on the screen to move the cursor, and tap on things to select them. If you want to go back to the home screen, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
The Remote app also lets you type on your iPhone instead of using the hunt-and-peck method for finding things on Apple TV. To bring up the keyboard, just tap on the text field you want to type in and then tap on “Dictation” at the bottom of the keyboard. You can also use Siri commands by tapping on “Siri” at the bottom of the keyboard and speaking into your iPhone’s microphone.
One more thing: The Remote app also lets you play and pause video, fast forward and rewind, adjust volume, and more—all without having to pick up the Siri Remote. Just open up Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of your iPhone’s screen (or down from top right corner if you have an iPhone X or later) and tap on one of the playback controls that appear at the bottom of Control Center.
Once your iPhone is paired with your Apple TV, you can use it to control your TV
If you’ve misplaced your remote or it’s just not working, you can use your iPhone to control your Apple TV. You’ll need to have your iPhone paired with your TV in order for this to work.
To pair your iPhone with your TV, open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to General > Remotes. Tap Add New Remote and follow the on-screen instructions.
Once your iPhone is paired with your Apple TV, you can use it to control your TV. Just open the Remote app and you’ll be able to use the touchpad to navigate around, play/pause content, adjust volume, and more.
Use the Siri Remote to control your Apple TV
You can use the Siri Remote that comes with your Apple TV to control it, even if you don’t have the plastic Apple TV remote. The Siri Remote has a few advantages over the older remote: it’s easier to use, it has a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope for playing games, and it has a button that you can press to summon Siri.
To use the Siri Remote as a replacement for the older remote, you’ll need to enable its VoiceOver feature. VoiceOver is a screen-reading technology that’s built into tvOS, and it will read aloud everything that appears on your screen. It’s designed for people who are blind or have low vision, but it can be useful for anyone who wants to control their Apple TV without a remote.
To enable VoiceOver:
1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver.
2. Turn on VoiceOver.
Now you can navigate your Apple TV using the touchpad on the Siri Remote. Swipe up, down, left, or right to move around the interface, and tap to select an option. To summon Siri, press and hold the Siri button on the remote.
If you want to disable VoiceOver, just go back to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn it off.
Use the Apple TV Remote app to control your Apple TV
If you’ve lost your Apple TV remote or it’s just not working, you can use the Apple TV Remote app on your iPhone, iPad, ipod touch to control your Apple TV. You can also use Siri to control your Apple TV.
The Apple TV Remote app has been designed to work with the latest generations of Apple TV, and it’s also compatible with some older models. However, if you have an older Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), you’ll need to use the Remote app that came with your device.
To control your Apple TV with the Remote app:
1. Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV.
2. Open the Remote app on your iOS device.
3. Tap Add a Device and then select your Apple TV from the list of devices that appears.
4. Enter the 4-digit code that appears on your screen and then click Done.
note: If you don’t see a 4-digit code appear on your screen, make sure that AirPlay is turned on for your Apple TV:
* Open Settings on your Apple TV and go to AirPlay.
* If Show When Locked is turned on, anyone with access to AirPlay will be able to play audio from your iOS device through your Apple TV without having to enter a passcode. If you don’t want anyone to be able to play audio from their iOS device through your Apple TV when it’s locked, turn off Show When Locked.
