How to Connect Your Apple Pencil

If you have an Apple Pencil (1st or 2nd generation), you can use it with these iPad models:

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
iPad Pro 11-inch
iPad Pro 10.5-inch
iPad Pro 9.7-inch
iPad (6th generation)
iPad mini (5th generation)
iPad Air (3rd generation)

To connect your Apple Pencil with your iPad, remove the cap and attach the Lightning connector. If your Apple Pencil won’t connect to your iPad, make sure the tips are clean and free of debris, and that there’s no damage, such as a bent connector.

What You Need

To connect your Apple Pencil to your iPad, you’ll need an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, or iPad Pro 9.7-inch. You’ll also need an Apple Pencil (1st or 2nd generation).

Turn on your iPad and launch settings app Tap bluetooth menu item Tap the slider next to “Bluetooth” to turn it on (if it’s not already on).

Tap the pencil icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Tap the “Connect” button next to “Apple Pencil.” A pop-up window will appear with a picture of an Apple Pencil and an iPad. Place your Apple Pencil on this picture, then tap and hold the button on its side for two seconds. The Apple Pencil will now be connected to your iPad!

Connecting the Apple Pencil

The Apple Pencil was designed to work with the iPad Pro, but it also works with the 6th-generation iPad and the 2018 iPad Pro models. If you have one of those iPads, you can use the Apple Pencil to draw and write.

To connect your Apple Pencil, remove the cap and plug it into the Lightning connector on your iPad. When you see the Pair button, tap it.

What to Do If Your Apple Pencil Won’t Connect
