When you’re planning a trip, the last thing you want to do is get stuck in traffic. Luckily, Apple Maps can help you avoid busy highways and roads when you’re driving to your destination.

Here’s how to use the feature:

Type in your destination as usual start navigation.
When the route options come up, tap on the three lines in top left corner of the screen.
A menu will pop up with different route options. Tap on “Avoid Highways.”
Now you’ll see a new route that avoids highways and busy roads.

Click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner

When you are planning a route, click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. A menu will pop up with the different route options. One of the options will be “Avoid Highways.” Click on that, and your route will be planned without highways.

Select “Avoid Highways”

To tell Maps that you don’t want to use highways on your route, open settings app and tap Maps. Then turn on the switch next to Avoid Highways.

Now, when you get directions, Maps will try to avoid roads with a lot of traffic. You can still see highways on the map, and you can still choose them as part of your route. But if there’s a route that doesn’t use highways,Maps will suggest that route first.
