Introduction
In order to know what series apple watch is, you will need to find the model number on the back of the watch. The model number will begin with “A” and is followed by a four-digit number. The first two digits of the four-digit number will correspond to the watch series, as follows:

In 2016, Apple released two new sizes, the 42mm and the 40mm. The 42mm is considered the medium size, while the 40mm is a new size that falls between the two.
The other way to tell what series your Apple Watch is, is by checking the model number. The model number for the original Apple Watch is A1553. The model number for the Series 2 is A1757, and the model number for the Series 3 is A1859.
